Previous issue date: 2007 / Esta dissertação trata das relações estabelecidas entre o homem e a natureza, durante a segunda metade do século XIX, em especial na região que margeia o rio Araguaia, entre as províncias de Mato Grosso e Goiás. À luz de um importante manancial de informações sobre a realidade socioambiental daquele contexto, nos valemos de textos de naturalistas, exploradores, navegantes e pesquisadores. Entre as experiências cotidianas de atores sociais, sobretudo aquelas relativas às suas ações políticas que, de forma direta ou indireta, influenciaram as relações socioambientais estabelecidas, destacamos Couto de Magalhães. Homem público, articulador e intelectual, que teve forte influência nas políticas de desenvolvimento da região centro-norte, sendo o responsável pela efetivação da navegação a vapor no Araguaia, que durou de 1868 a 1888. Como o objetivo principal dessa dissertação foi a busca da compreensão do meio ambiente nas estratégias políticas configuradas pelos discursos e projetos de atores sociais, nosso trabalho teve como eixo de análise a história ambiental, que é um campo de conhecimento, um ramo da história, que trata do papel e do lugar da natureza na vida humana e vive-versa, que muito nos favoreceu para vencermos o desafio de responder ao questionamento inicial, da relação homem-natureza e suas implicações, durante a segunda metade do século XIX, na região que margeia o rio Araguaia. _________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This dissertation deals with the relationships established between men and nature during the second half of the XIX, century in particular the region around the Araguaya River, between the provinces of Mato Grosso and Goiás. In light of an important spring of information about the socioenvironmental reality of that context, we used texts of naturalists, explorers, navigators and researchers. Among quotidian experiences of social actors, especially those regarding their political actions that, directly or indirectly, influenced the socioenvironmental relations established, we highlight Couto de Magalhães. Public man, articulate and intellectual who had a strong influence on the developmental policies of the central-North region, being responsible for the effective steam navigation of along the Araguaya, that lasted from 1868 to 1888. As the main objective of this dissertation was the search to comprehend the environment in the strategic policies figured in the speeched and projects of social actors, our goal had as analysis axis the environmental history, which is a field of knowledge, a branch of history, that deals with the rol and place of nature in human life and vice-versa, that immensely helped us to overcome the challenge of answering the initial question concderning the relationship men-nature and its consequences, during the second half of the XIX century , at the margin of the Araguaya River.
