Game Practice about Dark Patterns - Evoking Conversations on Dark Patterns in the Form of Game Design

This study explores the issue of dark patterns in the games industry, where game designs are made to exploit users for revenue. The thesis reviews the conflicting attitudes of academia, industry, and game players in understanding and applying dark patterns and highlights the absence of conversation. Through the RtD methodology, we developed a digital game to simulate these patterns and bridge the gap between industry practitioners and players to promote mutual understanding and reflection. This study used qualitative and quantitative methods, and practitioner and non-practitioner players were recruited to test the game. The study culminated in two prototype improvement directions for practitioners or non-practitioner players, and the practitioner improvement direction was selected as a future direction for this study. Despite some challenges, the project highlights the need to better recognize and discuss dark patterns to drive change in the game industry.
