The Swedish Transport Administration is the authority responsible for operating and maintaining the public road network. Their work with traffic safety is mainly based on Vision zero, a vision implementedto make sure no fatal accidents occur on the road network. To ensure no one dies, measures to improve the traffic safety have been performed at the high traffic road network. However, the same improvements have not been implemented at the low traffic road network, resulting in an inferior safety standard. Therefore, this thesis aim to examine the low traffic road network from a trafficsafety perspective. The purpose is to analyze which kind of measures that are socio-economically viable to implement at the low trafficroad network. Furthermore, other aspects of importance in the work of improving the traffic safety in the road system will be examined. To answer the stated purpose a thorough literature review as well asa case study have been used as methodological framework. The analysis of the material from the case study has been carried out using the analytical tool, Effekter vid väganalys (EVA). The measures found inthe case study can be divided into three categories; crash barriers, speed reduction and the creation of forgiving roadside areas. The results from the study showed that the proposed measures are not socio-economically viable. However, the analytical tool, EVA, used to analyze the result, is not adequate for the type of measures found in the study. Moreover, the use of socio-economic viability as the only aspect in deciding which measures to implement to improve road safety can be questioned. As an example, several lives were indeed saved with the implemented measures. Other aspects of importance is the possibility for people to continue living on the countryside, even in the future, as well as making sure the ambulance, police and fire brigade can reach the whole population.
