”I’m a librarian, I read all sorts of things” : En kvalitativ innehållsanalys av bibliotekariekaraktärer i nutida tv-serier / ”I’m a librarian, I read all sorts of things” : A qualitative content analysis on librarian characters in modern television programs

The purpose of this bachelor’s thesis is to examine the way in which librarian characters are portrayed on the contemporary television programs A Series of Unfortunate Events, Hilda, Once Upon a Time, Orange Is the New Black and YOU, including what stereotypes are evident. The empirical material consists of five television programs and nine librarian characters from 2011 to 2018. Applying a qualitative content analysis, the characters are studied using Seale (2008)’s article as a basis of observation. The results are compared to previous research, which emphasize the stereotypical trait of librarian characters as strict and restrictive, which is inconsistent with the findings of this study. In my investigation, librarian characters were commonly portrayed in a positive light and often as heroes with an important purpose.
