The purpose of this study is to examine the nude female figure among Karlstad municipality's public art, focus mainly on the artwork Med ett leende by the artist Viktor Korneev. Thus, the artwork is analyzed and compared with other public sculptures to demonstrate possible similarities and differences, between the works, but also in the relationship to the viewer. The chosen method for the study is semiotic analysis and reception analysis, The result is then discussed in the light of the gender studies framework via, among others, Lynda Nead and Griselda Pollock, as well as art sociologist Janet Wolff. Further result shows an ambivalent feminine code amongst the sculptures, and the deviant formal elements that is detected contradict conventions of art. It is established that the meeting between the viewer and the work of art is part of a democratic process.
