Vi ville veta hur verksamma lärare undervisar sina elever i matematik och vad de har för argument för sina respektive val. Under vår lärarutbildning har vi blivit mer och mer intresserade av hur matematikundervisningen kan bedrivas på ett bättre sätt. Utifrån egna erfarenheter har vi noterat att många elever upplever matematikämnet som svårt, tråkigt och enformigt. Metoden vi använt oss av är kvalitativ, vi har intervjuat lärare för att få deras tankar kring matematikundervisning. Vi utgick från några grundfrågor och ställde utifrån det passande följdfrågor. Studien omfattar intervjuer med sju lärare som har en varierande erfarenhet av yrket däremot arbetar samtliga med elever i åldrarna sju till tolv år. Utifrån lärarnas berättelser har vi funnit olika tillvägagångssätt vilka vi har fört samman till fyra olika teman; ”att göra”, ”att samtala”, ”att träna” samt ”att lösa problem”. Resultatet utgörs av personporträtt där vi sammanfattat lärarnas tankar och idéer kring matematikundervisning. Resultatet av studien visade att lärarna betonar vikten av variation samtidigt som de framhåller betydelsen av att arbeta praktiskt med matematik samt använda sig av konkret material. Studien ger också till förslag om vidare forskning i syfte att undersöka hur elever själva uppfattar matematik, hur de anser att de lär sig bäst. / Abstract Study: Degree project in teacher education, Advanced level, 15 hp University of Skövde Title: To practise teaching mathematics – Seven teachers stories Pages: 38 Authors: Angelica Dahlström & Anna-Karin Fallgren Tutor: Britt-Marie Olsson Date: January 2008 Keywords: Mathematics education – Approach The purpose of this study was to find out which approach teachers say that they use to make their pupils understand mathematics. We wanted to know how active teachers teach their pupils mathematics and how they argue about their individual choices. During our education we have become more and more interested of the subject; how can the mathematics education be performed in a better way? From our own experiences we have noticed that many pupils find mathematics as something difficult, boring and repetitive.The method we used during the interviews is qualitative. We have interviewed teachers to get their thoughts about mathematics education. We assumed from some basic questions and from the given answers we continued with suitable follow-up questions. The study comprises interviews with seven teachers who have a varying experience of their occupation. Though, all of them are right now working with pupils aged seven to twelve years. From what the teachers told us we have found different procedures which we have brought together into four different themes; “to do”, “to talk”, “to practice” and “to solve problems”. The result is constituted of person portraits where we summarized the teacher’s thoughts and ideas concerning teaching of mathematics. The result of this study showed that the teachers emphasize the meaning of working practical with mathematics and also make use of concrete materials. The study also generated ideas for future researches with the purpose to investigate how pupils understand mathematics and in which way they think they learn it the best.
