Encouraging Mathematics and Literacy Learning Through Bookmaking

Students need to become as physically and emotionally involved in their learning as they are academically. Procedures are presented for encouraging primary grade students to make comb-bound books to enhance knowledge of mathematics and literacy. In this application of the strategies presented, first grade students worked with third grade students in building the books and engaging in study. In addition to the books, students work with tiles to add a physical application to the learning of mathematics. Students study the written format of the numbers from one to nine and numbers in sentences containing common words. The focus herein is on primary grade students but strategies presented are applicable in a wide variety of grade levels and learning environments.
