Previous issue date: 2008-11-21 / Este estudo buscou identificar as concepções que ministros religiosos cristãos têm sobre a doença mental, ao revelarem as próprias experiências no atendimento de doentes mentais e/ou familiares desses, ancorado na Teoria das Representações Sociais. A escolha de ministros religiosos cristãos foi em razão de que no exercício da função de ministro religioso, portam e disseminam uma forma de pensar que exerce grande influência no grupo adjunto. Adicionalmente, observa-se na prática psiquiátrica que um número significativo de pacientes e seus familiares buscam na religião respostas ou soluções para o sofrimento vivenciado; este processo se traduz em atitudes que transitam tanto nos espaços pertinentes à psiquiatria, quanto nos pertinentes à religião. Foram entrevistados 19 ministros religiosos das denominações católica, evangélicas e espírita. O conteúdo das entrevistas foi submetido ao software ALCESTE que evidenciou dois eixos temáticos. O primeiro eixo estabelece a concepção de doença mental como uma doença da alma e foi dividido em duas classes: na relação obsediado e obsessor, a porta aberta para a doença mental; e doença mental versus possessão demoníaca: dois discursos paradoxais. O segundo eixo temático sustenta que na crença do bem e do mal é que se dá a organização do exercício ministerial, e foi dividido em três classes: concessão de autoridade para enfrentar o demônio; o bem e o mal são faces de uma mesma moeda; e nos sonhos e nos desejos o atalho para a opção ministerial. O produto deste trabalho possibilita subsidiar a sistematização de um conhecimento que possa ser utilizado como mais uma ferramenta de trabalho nas intervenções feitas em situações de sofrimento psíquico. ________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The present study aimed to identify the conceptions that religious Christian ministers have about mental illness, as revealed by their personal experiences in attending such individuals and/or their family, anchored in the Theory of Social Representations. The choice of religious Christian ministers was because, in the exercise of their function as religious minister, they carry and disseminate a form of thinking that exercises great influence in adjacent social groups. Additionally, it is often observed in psychiatric practice that a significant number of patients and their relatives turn to religion for answers or solutions for their suffering; this process translates itself in attitudes that are pertinent both to psychiatric care as well as to religion. Interviews were carried out with 19 religious ministers from the catholic, evangelical and spiritist denominations. The content of the interviews was submitted to the software ALCESTE resulting in two thematic axes. The first axis establishes the conception of mental illness as an illness of the soul and it was divided into two classes: in the relations between the spirit world and the material world, an open door for mental illness; and mental illness versus demon possession - two paradoxical speeches. The second thematic axis sustains that the organization of ministerial practice is based on the belief in the good and the evil, and it was divided in three classes: the concession of authority to face the demon; good and evil as faces of the same coin; and that in the dreams and desires lies the shortcut for the ministerial option. The product of this study provides clues which help to structure a systematic knowledge that can be used as one more working tool in interventions carried out in situations of psychic suffering.
