Previous issue date: 2017-03-31 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Este trabalho se dedica a investigar como o medo da violência causa transformações no espaço urbano e na sociedade através do estudo de caso da cidade de Montes Claros, Minas Gerais. Nesse sentido, as análises iniciais foram feitas através de pesquisa bibliográfica acerca da violência urbana, do medo e de seus intensificadores – a mídia do medo e a indústria do medo. E, também, sobre cinco transformações causadas no espaço urbano pela violência intrínseca ao processo de urbanização capitalista – a dispersão urbana, a estigmatização territorial, a segregação socioespacial – e pelo medo da violência criminal - a arquitetura do medo e o esvaziamento do espaço público. Após a investigação teórica acerca dos conceitos utilizados, foi feita a identificação e análise desses processos no espaço urbano de Montes Claros. Primeiramente, foi realizada uma caracterização do crescimento econômico e demográfico da cidade e uma investigação a partir de dados criminais e de entrevistas com um membro da Polícia Militar e com um empresário do ramo da segurança privada para compreender como a criminalidade e a busca por proteção se manifestam na cidade. Além disso, foram selecionados dois bairros de Montes Claros para que se investigasse como o medo da violência e as transformações causadas por ele se manifestam nesses espaços. Como parte da metodologia foram realizadas análises visuais por meio de fotografias dos bairros e entrevistas com comerciantes e moradores dessas áreas com o intuito de compreender como o medo da violência e suas consequências são vivenciados no cotidiano da população. Os resultados comprovaram que o medo da violência causa transformações no espaço urbano das áreas de estudo e no convívio social de sua população. Todos os processos abordados na pesquisa bibliográfica puderam ser observados e comprovados no caso de Montes Claros/MG. A problemática do medo da violência está presente de forma concreta no espaço urbano das cidades e traz consequências que interferem na qualidade de vida da população, fato que mostra que esse debate é pertinente e importante para o estudo das cidades. / This work investigates how the fear of violence causes transformations in the urban space and in society through the case study of Montes Claros, Minas Gerais. In this sense, the initial analyzes were made through bibliographic research about urban violence, fear and its intensifiers – the media of fear and the industry of fear. And, also, about five transformations caused in the urban space by the intrinsic violence in the capitalist urbanization process – the urban sprawling, the territorial stigmatization, the sociospatial segregation – and by the fear of criminal violence - the architecture of fear and the public space emptying. After the theoretical investigation about the concepts, the identification and analysis of these processes were made in the urban space of Montes Claros. First, a characterization of the economic and demographic growth of the city was made and an investigation through criminal data and interviews with a Police member and with a businessperson from the private security market to understand how the criminality and the search for protection manifest in the city. Besides this, two neighborhoods of Montes Claros were selected to investigate how the fear of violence and its transformations happen in these spaces. As a part of methodology, visual analysis were made through pictures and interviews with merchants and residents of the area aiming to understand how the fear of violence and its consequences are experienced in the population’s daily. The results proved that the fear of violence causes transformation in the urban space of the studied areas and in the population’s social life. All the processes shown in the bibliographical research could be observed and proved in the case of Montes Claros/MG. The fear of violence problem is present in a concrete way in cities urban space and brings consequences that interfere in the population’s quality of life, fact that shows that this debate is pertinent and important to the study of cities.
