Project managers in the IT industry have been faced with new and complex challenges during the ongoing digitization when it comes to managing virtual teams. This study aims to investigate how IT project managers deal with these challenges and what techniques they use to promote communication and collaboration in virtual teams. Through semi-structured interviews with experienced project managers, both advantages and obstacles to working virtually are identified. The results show that project managers must be proactive and adapt their leadership styles to the technological tools available. Effective communication, real-time tools and transparency are critical to maintaining team dynamics and motivation. The study also highlights the importance of understanding and integrating team members' preferences for technology solutions to minimize conflict and promote a positive work environment. By applying transformational leadership and creating structured work processes, project managers can better navigate the challenges that come with virtual teams and thereby increase the efficiency and productivity of virtual projects.
