The purpose of the present study was to get to know and to analyze the impressions and interpretations of listeners concerning electrolaryngeal speech with and without the image of laryngectomized patients during oral production, to assess the non-verbal expressive potential for production and transmission of sense effects. The method comprised two steps. The first step gathered 10 lay people and 14 speech and voice therapists to assess the speech of 4 electrolaryngeal speakers, without having their image. In the second step, subjects assessed the speech presented in the previous step but seeing the image of laryngectomized patients producing it. Results showed that in the first step, both lay people and speech and voice therapists were attained to the verbal content of the message, especially the limitations of speech intelligibility imposed by the use of the electrolarynx. In the second step, it was quite evident that gestures, change in posture and body tone and facial expressions maximized subjects' communication, providing an impression on the listeners and conveying dimensions capable of facilitating the communication between electrolaryngeal speakers and their interlocutors. Thus, we concluded that speech and voice therapy with total laryngectomized patients should emphasize communication as an inter-subject process that comprises the whole body, approaching non-verbal and related elements to improve communication of alaryngeal speakers and contributing to their subjective restructuring / A fala eletrolaríngea possui particularidades que podem afetar a relação comunicativa entre o laringectomizado total e seu interlocutor. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi conhecer e analisar as impressões e interpretações de ouvintes em relação à fala eletrolaríngea com e sem a imagem do laringectomizado durante a emissão oral e, com isso, estimar o potencial expressivo não-verbal na produção e veiculação de efeitos de sentido. O método utilizado foi um experimento composto por duas etapas. Na primeira, 10 leigos e 14 fonoaudiólogas avaliaram a fala de 04 laringectomizados, sem acesso à imagem dos falantes. Na segunda fase, os sujeitos apreciaram as falas da etapa anterior, agora acompanhadas da imagem dos falantes eletrolaríngeos quando as emitiram. Os resultados mostraram que, na primeira etapa, tanto os leigos quanto as fonoaudiólogas se ativeram ao conteúdo verbal das mensagens, sobretudo às limitações de inteligibilidade de fala impostas pelo uso da eletrolaringe. Na segunda fase, ficou evidente que gestos, mudanças de postura e de tônus corporal e expressões faciais potencializam a comunicação de tais sujeitos, desempenhando função impressiva em relação ao ouvinte e configurando dimensões capazes de facilitar a relação comunicativa entre o falante eletrolaríngeo e seu interlocutor. Dessa forma, concluiu-se que o trabalho fonoaudiológico com o laringectomizado total deve enfatizar a comunicação como um processo que acontece com todo o corpo e de maneira intersubjetiva, abordando-se elementos não-verbais e relacionais, com o objetivo de se aprimorar a comunicação do falante não-laríngeo e contribuir para sua reestruturação subjetiva
