Fiktiv kannibalism som läromedel : – Den didaktiska potentialen i den dystopiska romanen Utsöktkadaver för svenskämnets värdegrunds- och litteraturarbete

The aim of this study is to investigate the educational potential of the Swedish translation of Agustina Bazterrica’s dystopian novel Cadáver exquisito (2017), and how the novel can be related to the Swedish upper secondary school’s steering documents—more specifically what they present regarding ethical and environmental issues. The novel is analysed thematically through an ecocritical perspective before it is analysed in relation to its “educational potential”, a term borrowed from Malin Alkestrand (2016). The results show that while the novel can be used to encourage students to reflect and think critically and empathetically about ethical and environmental issues regarding animal and human rights, consumerism, and language and propaganda, it also risks making students pessimistic about the future and their ability to work for a more sustainable society. However, if teachers relate the novel to the students’ own experiences and ensure that students are mature enough to read the novel, it can serve as a tool to unite the school’s fundamental values and the syllabus for Swedish.
