This present work is an attempt to understand social and inter-ethnical relations between indigenous population, the Capuchin missionaries and other characters involved in the colonization process within the County of Caravelas – located in the southernmost part of Bahia – during the nineteenth century. The main interest in this research is to emphasize the indigenous agency facing this colony implementation and catechism process. In this sense, taking the conflicts into consideration, we seek to perceive manners with which indigenous groups created strategies and struggled to preserve their interests and how they navigated within this context of significant changes marked by violence and subjugation of native people. / Salvador
