Background: There are about 55 million people worldwide living with dementia. Dementia cause cognitive impairment that includes reduced thinking and memory ability. and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) occurs in 90 percent of all dementia cases. Agitation, aggressive behaviour and depression are common examples. BPSD commonly causes an increased need of caring which leads to the need for nursing home residency. As no curative treatment exists, strategies aimed for symptom alleviation is the primary form of treatment. Aim: To create an overview of nursing interventions that alleviate BPSD for people with dementia living in nursing homes. Method: A general literature review. Result: BPSD may be alleviated by nursing interventions based in music, environment stimulation, psychosocial interactions and sensory stimulation. Nursing interventions have been proven to reduce the extent, frequency, duration and progression of BPSD. Conclusion: Several nursing interventions have been proven to alleviate suffering caused by BPSD and this essay presents the alleviation it can accomplish. Nursing interventions enables reduction of the negative impact caused by BPSD. This essay provides an insight of existing variations of relevant nursing interventions and can contribute with knowledge of its execution and effect.
