"Må jag komma dithän där jag aldrig kan se befläckelsens berg" : Genus och didaktisk potential i Euripides Backanterna (405 f.Kr)

“May I reach a place where I can never see the mountain of defilement” The aim of this study is to investigate how different aspects of gender are actualized in Euripides’ play The Bacchae (405 BC). Specifically, it examines how hegemonic masculinity and gender systems are constructed. Furthermore, the purpose is to create an understanding of how it can be used in relation to the Swedish school subject in order to address various value-related questions. To achieve this aim, the study utilizes close reading as a method. The results show that the play addresses different matters of gender, in which various aspects of masculinity (hegemonic, subordinate, marginalized, and complacent) are both created and challenged. The gender system can be interpreted in different ways, but shows signs of both female subordination and female liberation - influenced by norms, behaviors, and the male hierarchy. Additionally, this creates tensions that contradict the values specified in the Swedish curriculum. In summary, the study shows that The Bacchae is filled with didactic potential regarding these matters - creating room for the development of morality, equal and democratic values, and critical thinking.
