Mäns upplevelser av hur ett alkohol- och/eller narkotikaberoende påverkar deras aktivitetsutförande : - En kvalitativ studie

Summary Titel: Men’s experiences of how alcohol and/or drug addiction affect their activity performance. A qualitative study.   Background: Individuals that suffers from addiction experience physical and psychosocial problem, which means that their activity performance becomes inadequate. Addiction and abuse is a significant public health issues with a high rate of recurrence. At present, about 90% of people with an addiction ends up in relapse within the first year of recovery. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate how men of working age with an addiction to drugs and / or alcohol experience their activity performance in the daily activities. Method: The study was conducted based on a qualitative method with semi structured interviews. Eight men in working age were interviewed about their experience of how addiction affects their activity performance. The data were analyzed using a qualitative content analysis. Results: The results were reported in 4 main categories: Changed roles affect social activities, The perception of everyday activities, The feeling of being restricted in everyday situations and Health impacting activity performance negatively. Under each main category, subcategories identified , describing different experiences of each main category. Conclusion: Addiction had a major impact on the individual’s activity performance. The interviewees found that the drug became the priority in everyday life and governed the choice of activities.
