This volume contains 55 photographs taken by the Moravian missionary Hermann
Moritz Bau in South Africa. Born into an old Herrnhut family in Surinam in 1865, he trained in Germany as a cabinetmaker and missionary. Arriving in Cape Town in 1891, he worked as a teacher and later as a missionary at several mission stations in the Western Cape. The photographs illustrate the life of missionaries and those around them, as well as landscapes of the Cape and the personal perceptions of the photographer.
