Background: As age increases, so does the number of people with dementia. Dementia is a collective name for various diseases of the brain that are associated with cognitive and physical deterioration. Annually, between 20,000–25,000 people become ill with some form of dementia and the same number die because of it. Dementia does not only affect the affected individual, relatives and close relatives of a person with dementia are also affected by various stresses. Purpose: To describe experiences of being a relative of a person with dementia. Method: A general literature review carried out according to Friberg. A total of thirteen articles were analysed, eleven qualitative articles and two quantitative articles. Results: Four themes were identified in the results; changed life situation, changed relationships, lack of knowledge and support and handing over care. Conclusion: It is important to maintain and create positive experiences for relatives and help them to be involved in the care of their loved one even after the move to a care home in order to be able to provide tailor-made, person-centred and professional care. Individually adapted support and help for people with dementia and adequate support for relatives have a great importance for relatives, which can lead to less workload for relatives and reduce their suffering.   Keywords: Carers, Dementia, Experiences, Literature review, Relatives
