Ensamkommande flyktingbarn : Upplevelser av att bo på ett gruppboende och att flytta därifrån

The purpose of this study is to investigate the unaccompanied children's experiences of the support offered at group homes intended for this group. The purpose is also to find out if they feel like the stay at the group home has prepared them for an independent life. The study has a qualitative approach and results collection occurred through semi-structured interviews. Seven young men aged 18-20 years were interviewed, all of them have lived for at least one year in a group home and are now living in their own apartment. The results have shown that the adolescents had both positive and negative experiences from their stay at the group home and that they have different views about whether they have received the support they need to cope independently. The adolescents expressed that they felt prepared in a few areas but that they lacked certain knowledge that would have benefited them in the establishment. The study's findings have shown that despite the difficulties the adolescents have gone through, the group has a relatively high sense of coherence (SOC) and access to useful coping strategies that enabled the adolescents to cope with this. The study also shows that the group home in many areas are preparing the adolescents for an independent life, but there are a number of areas in need of development. However, the adolescents have largely managed to deal with the lack of this knowledge through the support offered by Social services after they had moved out from the group home. In the discussion we have argued about the need for clear communication between the residents and the staff, especially when it comes to rules. Furthermore, we believe that there is need for development of the trustee assignment.
