Matematikutvecklande arbete i de tidigare åren : att förstå och förklara matematik

The purpose of this study is to explore how to get students at grade two to understand the connection between the concrete and the symbolic mathematical language. I interviewed a group of students at grade two and tested a number of exercises with them. These interviews and exercises were tape-recorded. The results showed that students had an understanding of the relationship between the symbolic language, the concrete representation and their own numeracy stories. It turned out that students think in different ways and all students can not explain with words, their solutions and ideas. The students’ reaction to the exercises was positive.
