Gymnasielärares uppoffringar för ett sommarlov : En studie om gymnasielärare med ferietjänst och deras upplevelser av balansen mellan arbets- och privatliv / High school teachers' sacrifices for a summer vacation : A study of highschool teachers with holiday service and their experiences of work-life balance

The Swedish teaching profession includes a form of employment, ferietjänst, which can be seen as a flexible employment. This is because the employment includes trust working hours which the teacher can place as they wish, when and where they want. The teachers also have time off on students' leave, there fore they have fewer days to use their working hours, which means that they have more working hours per month. Previous studies show how teachers have an increased workload. Flexible employment allows the possibility to work from home which can also facilitate individuals' demands from work. However, previous research shows that women tend to take on more housework when they have a flexible employment. Mean while men tend to increase their workload. This can be seen as a threat to gender equality that is shown to be increasing, especially in Sweden. The purpose of this study is to investigate how female and male high school teachers' experience boundaries and balance between work and private life based on their flexible form of employment. The study was carried out using a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews. Using theories about profession, work life balance, permeability, blending, social role theory of gender differences and similarities helped to understand and interpret the result. The result showed that the form of employment offers the respondents an opportunity to be flexible, which results in, among other things, working from home. The male respondents use the strategy of finishing as much work as possible at school so they don't have to work evenings and weekends from home. They also describe how they take on several different roles in their profession, such as a psychologist and a mediator. The female respondents spend most of their trust working hours from home. Here they are limited in the ability to set physical boundaries. This can result in combining housework with work. They also tend to take on a caring role in their work.
