The awareness of the chiropractic profession amongst the black population living in the East Rand in South Africa

M.Tech. / The purpose of this study was to determine the awareness, which is the knowledge, usage, need and attitude, towards the chiropractic profession in the black population of South Africa in the East Rand in Daveyton. The study was conducted as a qualitative survey study, where two hundred and fifty research questionnaires were randomly distributed to two hundred and fifty participants who met the inclusion criteria for the study. The inclusion criteria were that subjects had to be 18 years of age and older, were of black ethnicity, had to be living in Daveyton in the East Rand, and were not involved in any chiropractic practices. All the participants were requested to take part in an interview, and the questionnaire was completed by the researcher. The questionnaire had two sections, section A testing the participants biographic information, and section B, which tested the participants knowledge of chiropractic and the services it rendered. Each questionnaire took about 20 minutes to complete. The response rate was ninety nine point nine percent, with two hundred and fifty questionnaires distributed, and two hundred and fourty nine questionnaires completed. The results demonstrated that only 17.1% within this section of the South African population had any knowledge of what chiropractic is, and 68.4% of the respondents had not utilized the services of a chiropractor. The majority of the participants in the study were males, at 53.4%, and the ages ranged between 19 and 81, with the majority of the participants being between the ages of 19-20, 1 0.8%. The employment status of the participants ranged between 32.9% of the participants being full time employed, and 30.5% of the participants were unemployed seeking employment. The educational status of the participants showed that 37.5% had a grade twelve qualification, and 31.9% had a post school certificate/ diploma or degree. The participants in the study were also not certain of what the job description of a chiropractor was, with 41.3% of the participants describing a chiropractor's work being similar to that of a General Practitioner, and 22.2% to a massage therapist. The referral mode of the participants demonstrated most of the participants were referred by a friend or family member who had consulted with a chiropractor, followed by their General Practitioner. The participants showed that they would like to have a chiropractor in their living or working area, 88.8% of the participants. The researcher therefore concluded, from the results of the study, that the black South African population in Daveyton on the East Rand had very little knowledge of chiropractic as a profession, and more educational efforts were needed to inform this sector of the South African population. It is recommended that future studies be undertaken in a different section of South Africa, with a larger black participant population size, to determine if there is a lack of awareness of chiropractic throughout South Africa, as the findings in the study was not representative of the South African black population as a whole.

Är en professionell lärare en lämplig lärare? : en idéanalys av debatten om lärarlegitimationen

The purpose of this study is to investigate perceptions of the teaching profession and education in the political debate concerning teacher certification. I have, based on the purpose, issued three question that form the basis of this study. They are: To what extent does the participants in the debate perceive the teaching profession as a profession? Based on the perception that the teaching profession is a profession, to what extent and how is the requirement for certification being justified? Which perceptions regarding education are being expressed in the debate? The method used to carry out this study is an idea analysis, which is generally used when analysing political debates. The purpose of using this method is to obtain clarity of what is said in a debate. Furthermore, the theoretical concepts that are relevant for the implementation of this study are profession and education. The result of this study shows that the debaters define a professional as a person who is motivated, has an education, is suitable to practice his/her profession, has the knowledge required in his/her profession and has received a certification. The result also indicates that the aim of introducing a teacher certification is to strengthen the teacher profession as a profession. However, there are some flaws with the certification that might leave the aim of it unfulfilled. Finally, the result of the study shows that education is left in the dark in the debate.

L'engagement professionnel du personnel enseignant du secondaire dans la profession enseignante: nature, manifestations et facteurs

Au Québec, la complexification progressive du travail enseignant due, entre autres, à un accroissement de la charge de travail ainsi qu’à la précarité d’emploi persistante a engendré un désintéressement à la profession enseignante. Pour certaines enseignantes et certains enseignants, particulièrement au secondaire, cela a pu mener à des remises en question de la carrière, voire à l'abandon de la profession (Mukamurera et Balleux, 2013). Malgré ces difficultés, près de 80 % du personnel enseignant du Québec persévère et se considère assez ou très engagé dans l’enseignement (Houlfort et Sauvé, 2010). Considérant l'importance de l'engagement professionnel enseignant dans la réussite des élèves et l'efficacité des écoles (Mkumbo, 2012; Rosenholtz 1985), nous nous intéressons à la compréhension de la nature de cet engagement chez les enseignants du secondaire au Québec, à ses manifestations ainsi qu’aux facteurs qui l’influencent. Pour éclairer ce phénomène, des entrevues ont été menées auprès de 10 enseignantes et enseignants du secondaire. Les résultats montrent que l’engagement professionnel enseignant est de nature multidimensionnelle et que ses manifestations débordent des frontières de la salle de classe. La réussite scolaire et personnelle de l’élève se situe au cœur du sens et de l’expression que les enseignants attribuent à leur engagement professionnel. Il s’enracine principalement dans une forme d’attachement psychologique à l’enseignement comme métier de contacts avec les jeunes, de relations d’aide et de transmission des connaissances. Par ailleurs, une tension apparaît entre les facteurs favorables et les facteurs défavorables à cet engagement quant aux aspects qui touchent le rapport personnel au métier, l’organisation du travail, les rapports de collaboration avec les collègues et les parents, le comportement des élèves et la valorisation sociale de la profession. La possibilité de s’investir pleinement et la volonté de poursuivre la pratique de la profession enseignante dans une perspective de long terme s’accroissent ou décroissent en fonction du vécu par rapport à ces divers facteurs.

Vi äger tiden : En studie om hur förskollärare ser på sin yrkesroll i relation till tidshantering

Syftet med studien är att undersöka hur förskollärare ser på sin yrkesroll och dess innehåll i relation till tidshantering. Våra frågeställningar berör deltagarnas syn på yrkesrollen samt vilka prioriteringar som görs och varför. Vi ser det som ett problem att förskollärare ofta upplever sig stressade över sin arbetssituation samt känslan av att tiden inte räcker till. Med hjälp av kvalitativ metod genomfördes sex stycken intervjuer med deltagare från två olika kommuner, samtliga hade behöriga förskollärarutbildningar. I bakgrundslitteraturen kunde vi se hur förskollärarens yrkesroll har ändrats över tid samt hur kompetenskravet ökat och fler arbetsuppgifter lagts till i professionens befintliga tid. Resultatet visade att förhållningssättet påverkar till stor del hur förskolläraren upplever att arbetsuppgifterna hinns med. De förskollärare som ser samvaron med barnen som det centrala i deras yrkesroll känner sig mer stressade över administrativa uppgifter än de förskollärare som ser tiden i barngrupp likvärdig med tid för planering, dokumentation, utvärdering, föräldrakontakt med mera.

Syfte Syftet med denna studie är att förklara hur auktoriserade revisorer upplever att de senaste förändringarna inom revisionsbranschen påverkat samhällsnyttan av revision. Metod En kvantitativ undersökning genomfördes via en elektronisk enkät som skickades ut till svenska auktoriserade revisorer, varpå en statistisk analys av 130 svar var möjlig. Resultat Resultatet visade att medlemmarna av den svenska revisorsprofessionen är enade. Revisorer identifierar sig både professionellt och organisatoriskt. Svenska revisorer upplever att rådgivning är positivt för samhällsnyttan, de upplever även att ISA har en positiv inverkan på samhällsnyttan. Äldre revisorer är dock negativa till internationella regelverk. En stark revisorsidentitet visade sig vara avgörande för uppfattningen om förändring ökar eller minskar samhällsnyttan. Praktiskt bidrag och sociala aspekter Studien har visat att professionell identitet och organisatorisk identitet kan mätas som ett samlat begrepp, kallat revisorsidentitet. Begreppet innefattar hela revisorsprofessionen med både profession och organisation. Studien bidrar även till förståelse över hur förändringar inom den svenska revisorsprofessionen uppfattas av de svenska auktoriserade revisorerna. / Purpose The aim of our study was to explain how the authorized auditors in Sweden perceive that the institutional changes have affected the public interest o auditing. Method A quantitative study was made through an electronic survey which was sent to authorized auditors in Sweden. Were 130 answers could be used in the statistical analysis. Findings The result shows that the members of the Swedish audit profession are united. Auditors identify themselves both with professional and organizational identity. Swedish auditors perceive that consulting is positive for the public interest; they also feel that ISA has a positive impact on the public interest. However; older auditors have a negative attitude towards international regulations. The auditor identity turned out to be the crucial element whether or not institutional changes perceived to increase or decrease the public interest. Practical implications and originality The study has showed that professional identity and organizational identity can be assembled as one concept, the auditor identity. The concept includes the entire audit profession, both profession and organization. The study also contributes to the understanding of how institutional changes in the Swedish audit profession is perceived by the Swedish authorized auditors

Bakgrund Denna studie tar upp förskollärares syn på sin yrkesroll och på sitt uppdrag i förskolan. Förskollärares uppdrag står beskrivet i förskolans läroplan men vi ville undersöka hur förskollärare själva beskriver sitt yrke och vad de anser är deras uppdrag. I bakgrunden redogörs för tidigare forskning och litteratur kring förskolläraryrkets framväxt, förskollärarensyrkesroll, uppdrag och professionalisering. Syfte Syftet med studien är att undersöka förskollärares syn på sin yrkesroll och sitt uppdrag i förskolan. Metod I vår studie användes kvalitativ metodik med inriktning på intervjuer. Tio verksamma förskollärare intervjuades för att synliggöra deras egen uppfattning om sin yrkesroll och vad de anser är förskolläraryrkets uppdrag. Resultat Resultatet redogörs för i fem kategorier där förskollärarna beskriver sin yrkesroll och deras uppdrag i förskolan. Yrkesrollen beskrivs innebära att vara en trygg källa för barnen samt att vara en förebild. Det framkommer att trygghet och flexibilitet är de kompetenser som värderas högst hos förskollärarna. Deras uppdrag beskrivs vara att skapa trygghet och möjligheter för barns lärande. Läroplanen beskrivs vara en grund till allt arbete på förskolan som även tydliggör förskollärarnas uppdrag. Det framkommer olika tankar kring förskollärarnas relation till beprövad erfarenhet och vetenskaplig grund. Större delen av förskollärarna anser att de arbetar med begreppen samtidigt som det även framkom en osäkerhet kring begreppens innebörd.

Bureaucracy, the profession, and retention of Captains in the U.S. Army

Richard Goe / This research examines if the U.S. Army has a problem retaining high performing junior officers, with a focus on officers with the rank of Captain. It is theoretically posited that officer retention is influenced by a contradiction that exists between the profession of being an army officer and the social context of the bureaucratic structures in which officers are embedded. Specifically, the formal, rational bureaucratic structures utilized by the army restrict the agency of individual officers in making professional career decisions. In turn, it is hypothesized that this serves as a disincentive for officers to remain in the army. A methodology is developed for categorizing the performance characteristics of U.S. Army Captains. Retention rates are compared among Captains with different performance levels. Logistic regression analysis is used to identify correlates between Captains' perceptions of army bureaucratic structures and their planned career decisions. The results of this study can inform the development of retention strategies or policies that target the retention of high performing Captains in the U.S. Army.
