A qualitative analysis of selection to flag rank in the United States Navy

Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / This thesis is a qualitative analysis of selection to Rear Admiral (Lower Half) in the United States Navy. Specifically, this thesis examines the variables in the career of senior US Navy officers that can be considered as factors in determining advancement at the O-7 selection board. The researcher conducted 18 semi-structured interviews with active duty and retired flag officers, using a protocol based on an analysis of archival data from flag officers promoted from year groups 1972 to 1978, and relevant literature to determine what factors are considered during the selection board process. Overall, the data indicate that select background and performance variables are important factors in the promotion of flag officers. Examples include the importance of reputation and fitness report rankings and the lack of weight given to factors such as commissioning source and letters of recommendation. / Lieutenant, United States Navy

Bureaucracy, the profession, and retention of Captains in the U.S. Army

Richard Goe / This research examines if the U.S. Army has a problem retaining high performing junior officers, with a focus on officers with the rank of Captain. It is theoretically posited that officer retention is influenced by a contradiction that exists between the profession of being an army officer and the social context of the bureaucratic structures in which officers are embedded. Specifically, the formal, rational bureaucratic structures utilized by the army restrict the agency of individual officers in making professional career decisions. In turn, it is hypothesized that this serves as a disincentive for officers to remain in the army. A methodology is developed for categorizing the performance characteristics of U.S. Army Captains. Retention rates are compared among Captains with different performance levels. Logistic regression analysis is used to identify correlates between Captains' perceptions of army bureaucratic structures and their planned career decisions. The results of this study can inform the development of retention strategies or policies that target the retention of high performing Captains in the U.S. Army.

The health, wellbeing and work satisfaction of New South Wales?? correctional officers: a pilot study of randomly selected correctional officers in one NSW prison

Abstract: The role of correctional officers has undergone rapid changes in response to increased prisoner populations and professionalization of the workforce to respond to more diverse prisoner issues and problems, including high levels of prisoners with substance abuse and mental health issues, ageing prisoners, and increased prisoner cultural diversity. Research into prisoner health has resulted in the implementation of strategies and some improvements in prisoner health. However there has been no corresponding research into the health of correctional officers. The last comprehensive research into correctional officer health was conducted by Webster et al[1] in 1982. Recently, in 2002, the New South Wales Auditor General raised correctional officers?? sick leave as an issue of concern. This pilot study tested a questionnaire which included some comparison questions with Webster??s study, as well as researching some more recent health issues. The questionnaire appeared overall to be valid and user friendly, and would be suitable for a larger study, albeit with minor alterations. The results of the research, as expected of a small pilot study (n=30) generated more questions than answers, and raised areas to be tested in a larger research study. Some results of this study were a reduction in correctional officer smoking levels from 1982 (Webster 44.3%, Australian population 39.1%), and a lower rate of smoking at 13% than the general male population in Australia in 2004, at 18.6%. Job satisfaction was almost twice as high as in 1982, yet correctional officers have almost half the level of occupational self esteem. Correctional officers had higher levels of harmful alcohol consumption (10%,) than 1982 correctional officers (5%) and of the 2004 male population in Australia (7.5%), and the 1982 population (5%). Occasional harmful alcohol consumption was almost twice as high amongst correctional officers (86%) than amongst other workers (42.8%). A high percentage of correctional officers had been assaulted in the course of their work (76%), but few sought professional debriefing, with most preferring to discuss this with family members (54%) and co-workers (46%). Although the mental health of correctional officers appears somewhat poorer than that of the general population, this, and any link between harassment or assault by prisoners and mental health and occupational self esteem and rewards requires further research.

Kondition ombord- energiomsättning hos Sjöstridsförbandens personal under skyddstjänst.

<p>Syfte och frågeställningar</p><p>Syftet med detta examensarbete var att göra en inledande studie som ger en första uppfattning av nivån på den aeroba energiomsättningen under skyddstjänst ombord på ett fartyg. Frågeställning: Vilken nivå på den aeroba energiomsättningen når försökspersonerna upp till under skyddstjänstövning?</p><p>Metod</p><p>Tjugotre kadetter som studerar till officerare genomförde förtester i form av submaximalt och maximalt cykeltest samt beep-test för beräkning av maximal syreupptagningsförmåga. Femton av dessa deltog som försökspersoner i en slutövning i skyddstjänst där hjärtfrekvens (Hf) mätningar gjordes och upplevd ansträngning skattades enligt Borgskalan.</p><p>Resultat</p><p>Sex av försökspersonerna uppnådde högst nivåer på den aeroba energiomsättningen under momentet "skrovskadeskydd", sju under momentet "brand 2" och två under "brand 1". Hf varierade mycket mellan momenten och individerna pga. att försökspersonerna hade olika arbetsuppgifter, men det moment som gav högst medel Hf och högst uppnådda Hf var skrovskadeskyddsmomentet. Den skattade ansträngningen enligt Borgskalan upplevdes som mest ansträngande i skrovskadeskyddsmomentet.</p><p>Slutsats</p><p>Under momenten var det flera som under mer än hälften av tiden låg i en pulszon som innebar medelintensivt eller högintensivt arbete, vilket tyder på att det krävs en hög aerob energiomsättning för många av uppgifterna. Trots att uppgifterna fördelades inom grupperna och några fick arbeta hårdare än andra bör den tyngsta uppgiften fungera som minimikrav som samtliga i besättningen måste uppnå. Nivån på ett konditionskrav för sjögående personal går ej att fastställa med denna studie, men värdena som presenteras visar dock att arbetet under längre tid kan ligga på nivåer som kräver en hög aerob energiomsättning.</p>

Abstract This study seeks to identify the recognition of self-orientation and self-merit. While many papers in this area have been published by a number of scholars, the impact of the same factors on the military officers remains relatively unclear because of their specialized field, unique characteristics, and self-contained. We believe that this research issue raises a number of important questions regarding the sociology and psychology and a systematic empirical examination will go a long way in filling the theoretical and empirical gap that remains in this field. Furthermore, we hope this study can make a giant help to the future work and organizational reformation. Qualitative researching method was used in this study. Based on the cognitive psychology, I seek to determine the military officers¡¦ personal valuations under a chaos, disorder, and indistinct society from four aspects ¡V turbulence, recognition, learning, and surpass, and how can they survive under a bureaucratic system which leads to autoanalysis oscillation. This study seeks to certify practical experience is a necessary course of life from I myself¡¦s past experiences. I introspected military officers¡¦ personal valuation and identified their professional position in a state of chaos. A new view of life, therefore, was re-established from a chaotic external environment. By using scientific analysis, I test and verify personal conducts to understand the patent of human behaviour, and the physical reaction when people was attacked by the outside world. The approach we advocated not only provided a general picture including sociology, psychology, cognitive science, situated cognition, cognitive psychology, comparative psychology, and social psychology, but also endowed a strong conceptual and empirical base for future work.
