”Det går inte att dela på en människa”A qualitative study of social workers views of collaboration with psychiatric care : En kvalitativ studie om socionomers syn på samverkan med psykiatrin / “It is not possible to divide a human” : A qualitative study of social workers views of collaboration with psychiatric care

The purpose of this study aims to investigate how social workers experience theinteraction with psychiatric care and if they feel that their clients are in need ofcontact with psychiatric care. Five qualitative interviews with practicing socialworkers were conducted. The empirical material has been studied with the supportof the Collaboration theory and the Distancing theory. The result shows that social workers feel that it has become more difficult forindividuals to get help from social services and the requirements to obtain saidhelp have become more stringent. Hence, there is a broader spectrum in thedemands and needs to which social workers need to cater to whilst recognizingthat psychiatric assistance required is increasingly more significant and, in manyways, inadequate.By reviewing the social workers experience, interaction and collaboration withpsychiatric care, the results suggest that their unclear aims and objective, difference in professional language, hierarchical divisions and poor insight intoeach other's competence were considered to be obstacles in their collaborationefforts. This is in line with the conclusions derived from previous research.Among the furtherance conditions, the most conspicuous was the personalinteraction as being experienced by social workers as the most beneficial factor.A by-product of the study undertaken shows that in spite of their differences, thereis an underlying respect for psychiatric care professionals amongst social workerswhilst acknowledging that the organizational structure in which they operate to bemechanical and strict, which can hinder the collaboration.
