Previous issue date: 2006-12 / Homens e mulheres se comportam de maneira diferenciada no espaço gerando formas de apropriação diferenciada, que conquanto se modifiquem através do tempo, nem sempre conseguiram modificar a lógica que rege o discurso social que, por sua vez, orienta as condutas segundo o gênero.. Os âmbitos privado e público são valorizados socialmente de maneira hierárquica e servem para designar o papel e função dos gêneros em cada sociedade, estabelecendo-se a divisão sexual dos papeis e funções assumidas por mulheres e varões no tecido social. De acordo com esta ordem, as mulheres são identificadas com o espaço privado onde devem cumprir com uma função reprodutiva biológica social e cultural entanto que os varões são vinculados com o espaço público no qual devem cumprir com uma função produtiva e provedora. Comumente, os comportamentos que não respeitam este esquema são identificados coletivamente como transgressões às normas impostas socialmente. Assim a incursão das mulheres no espaço público geralmente é condicionada pela manutenção das responsabilidades geradas no espaço privado e interpretada como uma saída em referência ao abandono do lugar socialmente naturalizado para o feminino, e pode produzir iniqüidades associadas com as formas e possibilidades de apropriação de dito espaço. Por que se diferencia o comportamento espacial de homens e mulheres? Como se diferencia? Como o espaço incide na reprodução das desigualdades? e Como estas situações são legitimadas pelo discurso social? São algumas das questões apresentadas neste trabalho que temos organizado metodologicamente em função da confluência de procedimentos indutivos e dedutivos. O percurso dedutivo foi realizado através de uma recopilação histórica destinada a analisar a orientação conceitual predominante na formulação de representações sociais sobre o espaço que guiam o comportamento segundo o gênero e o desenvolvimento indutivo concretizou-se tomando como eixo o discurso adotado por informantes sobre suas experiências cotidianas nos âmbitos privado e público (especificamente o lar e a rua). _______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / Men and women act in different ways in space, generating different ways of appropriation which undergo modifications throughout time, but not always in ways that could change the logic that rules social discourse, a discourse that guides behaviours according the gender. The private and public ambits are socially valorised in a hierarchy and serve to denote the role and function of the genders in each society, establishing a sexual division of roles and functions assumed by women and men. According to this order, women are identified with a private space where they have to accomplish a reproductive, biological, social and cultural function, while men are associated with the public space where they have to accomplish a productive and supplying function.
Usually, behaviours that don’t respect this scheme are collectively identified as transgressions to the socially imposed norms. Thus, the incursions of women in public arena are often conditioned by the maintaining of responsibilities created within the private space and interpreted as a way out in reference to the abandon from the place socially “natural” for women, and can produce inequities linked to the ways and possibilities of appropriation of that space. Why is the space behaviour of women and men differentiated? How are they differentiated? How does the type of space influence the reproduction of inequities? And how are these situations legitimated by the social discourse? These are some of the questions presented in this work, which was methodologically organized according to the confluence of inductive and deductive procedures. The deductive process was based on a historical recompilation oriented to analyze the predominant conceptual orientations in the formulation of the social representations about space that guide behaviour according to the gender. The inductive development is considered as an axle in the discourse adopted by the sources about their daily experiences in both private and public space (home and street, specifically).
