Abstract Upper secondary school is not mandatory in Sweden, but if one starts an education in Secondary school presence in class is compulsory. Many students are absent from class for different reasons. Absence can lead to drop out from school and that might have an impact on further possibilities to get a job in the future. Schools are criticized by Swedish Schools Inspectorate for lack of planned actions to promote presence in school. It is in my interest to find out the cause of absence and what are the means to promote presence in class. The purpose of this study is to investigate if there is a connection between Principals and School Healthcare Team's view on causes for student absence and what successful actions there are to promote school attendance. The intention is that the result of this study should be looked upon as supportive to School Governors and School Management when it comes to planning to promote development efforts. This study is quantitative and a web survey has been used as a method of data collection from 101 respondents, consisting Principals and School Healthcare Team in 33 schools. The survey contains cases where respondent's answers questions about presence promoting actions. The result does not show any significant connections between profession and the view of cause of absence as well as profession and actions taken to promote presence.
