Previous issue date: 2005 / Este estudo teve como objetivos analisar as Representações Sociais que
estudantes de Medicina têm do idoso e da velhice, buscando apreender as
concepções sob a ótica do estudante do 4º.ano da faculdade de Medicina de
Petrópolis; discutir as relações que este estudante tem com o idoso e a velhice e
identificar suas dificuldades, anseios e expectativas no manejo com os pacientes
idosos. Fizemos revisão bibliográfica sobre conceitos de Representações Sociais,
Representações Sociais e Saúde, Velhice e o Processo de Envelhecimento, e o
Idoso e a Velhice na Sociedade Brasileira Atual, falando de índices demográficos,
de como estamos nos relacionando com os idosos, tentando mostrar que a
"causa" deles é uma causa de todos nós. Esta é uma pesquisa de cunho
qualitativo que utilizou como instrumentos o questionário com perguntas semiestruturadas
e a técnica do ‘grupo focal’. A população de estudo foi composta por
noventa e seis estudantes que cursaram o 4º. ano de medicina, no ano de 2004.
A análise dos dados foi realizada utilizando dois procedimentos: cálculo de
freqüência de ocorrência e porcentagens, e análise temática dentro dos critérios
de análise de conteúdo. Os resultados foram discutidos e encontraram-se
concepções da velhice, como ‘sabedoria’ e ‘experiência’ para amenizar o fato de
ser um período de perdas, incapacidades, dependência, doença e proximidade da
morte. Podem ter qualidade de vida, se puderem trabalhar, ter lazer, serem
respeitados. Os velhos são teimosos, não aceitam a velhice, mas são pacientes
que reconhecem o trabalho dos estudantes como futuros médicos. Relacionam-se
bem quando são identificados como avós e parentes. As atitudes estão
diretamente relacionadas ao vínculo e são negativas quanto maior for o medo e a
angústia sentidos pelos estudantes, por associarem velhice à doença e à morte.
Revelam saberem pouco sobre o processo de envelhecimento, fato que dificulta a
relação médico/paciente por se sentirem impotentes, com limites. Consideramos a
importância da educação permanente no estímulo à construção do conhecimento
nesta área, visto que a velhice é uma realidade e a população idosa está em
crescente progressão. Relevamos a necessidade imperiosa de introduzir
estudantes de medicina nas comunidades, nos primeiros anos de graduação,
para que tenham o contato com a população saudável no sentido pleno da
palavra, visando que se crie vínculo e implante nos estudantes de medicina de
hoje, o senso de responsabilidade social. / This study had as objectives to analyze the Social Representations that students
of Medicine have of the senior and of the old age, looking for to apprehend the
conceptions as seen as by student's of the 4th grade of the Petropolis Medical
Scholl – Rio de Janeiro; the relationships that this student has with the senior and
the old age to discuss and to identify their difficulties, longings and expectations in
the handling with the senior patients. We made bibliographical revision on
concepts of Social Representations, Social Representations and Health, Old age
and the Process of Aging, and the Senior and the Old age in the Current Brazilian
Society, speaking about demographic indexes, of as we are linking with the
seniors, trying to show that their "cause" is a cause of all of us. This is a research
of qualitative stamp that it used as instruments the questionnaire with semistructured
questions and the technique of the ‘focus groups’. The study population
was composed by ninety six students that studied the 4th grade of medicine, in the
year of 2004. The analysis of the data was accomplished using two procedures:
calculation of occurrence frequency and percentages, and thematic analysis inside
of the criteria of content analysis. The results were discussed and they were
conceptions of the old age, as 'wisdom' and 'experience' to soften the fact of being
a period of losses, incapacities, dependence, disease and proximity of the death.
They can have life quality, if they could work, to have leisure, they be respected.
The old ones are stubborn, they don't accept the old age, but they are patient that
recognize the students' work as future medical doctors. They link well when they
are identified as grandparents and relatives. The attitudes are directly related to
the bond and they are negative as adult is the fear, the anguish felt by the
students, for they associate old age to the disease and the death. The students
demonstrated very little factual knowledge about the process of ageing, a fact that
impairs the student-patient relationship by intensifying the feelings of helplessness
and of limitation, normally expressed by medical students. We consider that the
introduction of a policy of continuous education represents a permanent stimulus
for the construction of knowledge in this area, helping make the students
understand that the ever increasing presence of the elderly in our society is a fact
of life. It is thus very important to introduce medical students directly into the
community, at an even earlier stage of their curriculum, permitting them to
establish a relationship to the healthy members of the community in order to
increase their bonding capacity as well as to help them develop more elaborately
