In this thesis, I wanted to explore my process of writing music, playing bass and leading an ensemble and investigate in what ways they affect each other. In order to explore these processes, I put together a group of eight musicians and played six songs specifically written for them. These songs are described as well as my general method of composing. These songs have been a way for me to explore different parts of my bass playing and how my bass playing might differ when being a bass player or sideman. Leading an eight-piece band made me realize that a smaller ensemble speaks more to my strengths as a bandleader. My goal has been to keep the rehearsals as an open forum wherein I invite and encourage ideas and criticism from my bandmates. In this process I discovered that self-doubt has affected my musicianship in different ways, and by spotting and identifying these ways I now have a more solid understanding of why I make some of the musical choices that I make. The conclusions I’ve drawn from this insight will help to inform future decisions, as well as help me when playing other people’s music.
