Frihet och ansvar : En studie om enhetschefers upplevelser av sin arbetssituation inom vård och omsorgsboenden

The purpose of this study was to obtain an in-depth understanding of how first line managers in care and nursing homes experience their work situation. To answer the purpose, two questions was designed, how do the interviewees experience their work situation? How can their experiences be understood from a demand, control and support perspective? To get an answer to this, a qualitative study was conducted with semi-structured interviews. Six first line managers participated in the interviews. The theoretical starting point in the study was Karasek and Theorell's demand, control and support theory and was used both in the design of the interview guide and in the analysis of the results. They experienced, for example, that they had high demands in the form of expectations that they would be able to perform and carry out many different tasks, be available to employees, caretakers, relatives and other staff. They also had large areas of responsibility, many employees and time and quality requirements, such as being able to perform tasks within certain time frames and with good quality. In terms of control, everyone felt that they had great influence and great participation in most things. They also had both experience and skills that proved to be an asset in terms of control in and over the work. Their access and use of support turned out to come largely from colleagues with whom they stated that they often brainstormed thoughts and ideas. They also had access to support from their managers and from support functions via the internet. In summary, the results showed that the first line managers who participated had predominantly positive experiences of their work situation thanks to a good balance between demands, control and support at work. They experienced high demands at the same time as they experienced high control and good support. Demands emerged that they perceived were less reasonable in relation to their control but still not so unreasonable that it affected their work situation all the more.
