The aim of this paper is to examine how religious individuals are portrayed depending on their gender, sexuality and ethnicity in digital teaching material for upper secondary school. How is the relationship between a person's religious faith, gender, sexuality and ethnicity portrayed? What kind of perceptions does this description create of the importance of religion for the individual and society? How can an intersectional analysis help to understand the perception of the importance of religion for the individual and society? The study is based on a documentary from Utbildningsradion, that is part of Swedish public service. Within Swedish public service the productions should be independent of political and commercial interests and provide a nuanced picture of the world and with an awareness concerning issues of gender, sexuality and ethnicity. The documentary is produced as educational material for upper secondary school and comes with material that the teacher can use with their class to learn about and discuss religion. The study shows that the documentary is characterized by a secular and relativistic perspective that covers discussions about religion in the Swedish media and the education system. From this secular perspective, can one discern that the documentary does not portray religion in Sweden, instead it is gazing out to the outside world to identify religiosity. The study also shows that religiosity is portrayed very differently depending on the individual's ethnicity, sexuality and gender. Islam is portrayed as the most problematic religion in contrast to Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism portrayed as more harmonious traditions. Terrorism and oppression of women with connection to religion is only visible within Islam, furthermore resistance from women is only described within Muslim contexts.
