Leadership is a widely discussed area that has resulted in various opinions and definitions. Therefore, the field becomes very ambiguous in its definition and what is actually required of leaders and managers in today's society. The purpose of this essay is to create a deeper understanding of today's leadership in relation to the historical development of leadership. The study should provide insight into what is required of today's leaders based on the content of leadership training. Based on previous research, the common denominator can provide elements to include leadership by evoking compliance and creating influence. Historically, leadership has been shaped by various theories, and this study argues that there are three theoretical components that have been the most influential in the development of today's leadership. These components are leadership based on traits, behavioral theories of leadership, and situational leadership, which together have contributed to the latter, new leadership. Therefore, an attempt has been made to create a better understanding of the significance of the historical perspective on today´s leadership. This has been done by examining companies that offer leadership training to gain insight into their reasoning and what they demand from today's leaders. To enable this, nine qualitative semi-structured interviews have been conducted. With the help of the theoretical framework, a model has been created to provide a comprehensive overview of what is required in today's leadership. Commonly mentioned concepts that respondents perceive to influence contemporary leadership are Motivation, Relationship, and Fellowship. Based on the interviews, it can be inferred that these three, as well as the relatively new concept of self-leadership, form the foundation of what is required in today's leadership. The study confirms that these aspects are essential in today's leadership, but other behaviors and traits should not be excluded as they should also be taken into account.
