Au 19e siècle, deux toponymes inverses et complémentaires, le château et la chaumière, représentent dans l'espace romanesque une double polarité, riche en implications sociales, historiques, symboliques et poétiques. Les oeuvres d'Aurevilly et de Huysmans privilégient l'une et l'autre ce dispositif spatial, en relation avec leur réflexion sur le siècle et leur univers imaginaire. L'approche choisie privilégie la dimension "sociopoétique", en s'intéressant à l'écriture des représentations et des interactions sociales. Cette écriture n'exclut pas l'imaginaire, qui y participe largement. Nous proposons quatre formes d'exploitation de cette représentation complexe : l'étude phénoménologique du dispositif spatial et architectural du château et de la chaumière permet de dégager à la fois le caractère archétypal et la spécificité de ces lieux romanesques. Les dimensions sociologique et diégétique des lieux replacent la réflexion dans son contexte historique et social et permettent de mesurer la fonction narrative et dramatique dans la construction romanesque. Enfin, l'esthétisation de l'écriture via le château et la chaumière dans une étude poétique et symbolique / In the 19th century, two opposite yet complementary toponyms, the castle and the cottage, represented in the novelistic space a double polarity that is rich in its social, historical, symbolic and poetic implications. The works of Jules Barbey d’Aurevilly and Joris-Karl Huysmans privileged, each in its own turn, this spacial apparatus, in relation to the reflection on the century and the imaginary world. The approach that we have chosen lays emphasis on the « sociopoetic » dimension, by being specifically interested in the writing of social representations and interactions. This writing does not exclude the imaginary. On the contrary, it takes part in it to a high extent. We propose four forms of exploration of this complex representation : the phenomenological study of the spacial and architectural apparatus of the castle and the cottage makesit possible to detect at the same time the archytypal character and the specificity of these novelistic places. The sociological and diegetical dimensions of these places anchors reflection once again in its historical and social context, on the one hand, and allow us to measure their narratorial and dramatic function in the novelistic construction, on the other.
