way, encouraging their preservation and the formation of an environmentalist conscience, and promoting the local populations welfare. As a sustainable activity, ecotourism must be firmed on three pillars: environmental, economic and social sustainability. On this third one is the focus of this work. With the goal of investigating social implications of the sustainable
ecotourism in local communities of Iranduba (AM), a study was going accomplished in two communities: São Tomé and N. Sra. do Perpétuo Socorro, through the direct observation, which was the first contact with the communities. In this first moment, was accomplished the application of a focal form for the characterization of each community. After that, the
quantitative and qualitative data gathering began, through the structured interview and the not-directive interview, respectively. Through this study was possible to characterize the way how the ecotourism is practiced in these communities, analyze the participation of the several actors involved in the activity, aiming a participant managing, verify the ecotourism influence on the way of life of the communities and also identify their main needs. Ecotourism has a huge social and economic importance for these communities, not only for the generation of
direct and indirect jobs, but also for the valorization of their habits and their culture, the creation of an environmental conscience and even for the self-esteem of these people. The
hotels act like the link among tourists/visitors attracted by the natural local beauties and by the wealth of this people and the local communities. The study revealed, however, a great
distance between ecotourism principles and the way as it is really practiced. It‟s necessary the adoption of important political, structural and managing changes, so that ecotourism, in fact, to present a sustainable and juster character regarding the local populations. These changes depend on the engagement and the negotiation among the several involved and responsible sectors for the activity success, what must take part in a serious and comprehensive strategic planning, which is the breakpoint for the reparation of inequalities and deficiencies. / O ecoturismo é um segmento da atividade turística que pode ser definido como viagem a uma área natural , utilizando de forma sustentável o patrimônio natural e cultural local, incentivando sua conservação e a formação de uma consciência ambientalista, e promovendo o bem-estar das populações anfitriãs. Como uma atividade sustentável, deve estar firmado sobre três pilares: a sustentabilidade ambiental, a sustentabilidade econômica e a sustentabilidade social. Sobre esta última está o foco deste trabalho. Com o objetivo de
investigar as implicações sociais do ecoturismo sustentável em comunidades locais do município de Iranduba (AM), foi realizado um estudo nas comunidades São Tomé e N. Sra. do Perpétuo Socorro por meio de observação direta. Foi realizada a aplicação de um formulário focal para a caracterização de cada comunidade. Os dados quantitativos e qualitativos foram coletados através de entrevista estruturada e de entrevista não-diretiva, respectivamente. O estudo caracteriza a forma como o ecoturismo é praticado nas comunidades, analisa a participação dos diversos atores envolvidos na atividade na busca da gestão participativa, verifica a influência do ecoturismo sobre o modo de vida dos comunitários e também identifica suas principais necessidades. O ecoturismo tem grande
importância social e econômica nas comunidades pesquisadas, não só pela geração de empregos diretos e indiretos, mas também pela valorização de seus costumes e de sua cultura,
da consciência ambiental e até da auto-estima das populações. Os hotéis funcionam como o ponto de ligação entre os turistas/visitantes, atraídos pelas belezas naturais locais e pela
riqueza desse povo, e as comunidades locais. O estudo revelou, no entanto, um distanciamento entre os princípios do ecoturismo e a forma como ele é praticado de fato. Fazse
necessária a adoção de medidas de caráter político, estrutural e organizacional para que o ecoturismo venha, de fato, apresentar um caráter sustentável e mais justo em relação às
populações locais. Essas medidas dependem do comprometimento e da negociação entre os diversos setores envolvidos e responsáveis pelo sucesso da atividade, o que deve estar contido em um planejamento estratégico multidisciplinar sério e abrangente, que é o ponto crucial
para a reparação das desigualdades e das deficiências.
