A systematic literature review of the strategic management theories of Henry Mintzberg and Peter Drucker

Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / The ability of any business to survive is highly dependent on its ability to continuously sustain an
advantage not only on its competitors, but also the constantly changing environment that it
operates in. In our current global economy it is imperative that a company’s business leaders
consistently make better decisions than their competitors to ensure that they survive, grow and
maintain a healthy economical status. This can only be done through insight, knowledge, skill,
experience and leadership – all of which is build up over time and hard work. It also highlights and
questions the effect that management and strategic thinkers has had on the outcome of successful
businesses.
With an abundance of strategic theories, frameworks and books available, this research opted for
an approach to understand the domain of strategic management by focusing on the theories and
teachings of two significant thinkers of business strategy – Peter Drucker and Henry Mintzberg.
The researcher conducted a structured and systematic review of existing literature and
synthesised the information and results in this thesis. The researcher explored Drucker and
Mintzberg’s views on strategic thinking, strategy planning, strategy process, innovation,
entrepreneurship and the art of crafting strategy.
