The purpose of this study is to describe and create an understanding of how the life of addiction for women relates to experiences of stigma and shame in different stories. Addiction is considered a complex social issue because the problem can occur in all ages and social classes of society. Abuse reflects an inequality between men and women that is maintained in many ways in society. The empirical material is obtained from reading six autobiographical books by women with drug and/or alcohol abuse. The results are analyzed using Goffman's theory of stigma and shame and gender theory. The results have shown that women with addiction problems experience shame and stigma and this has a negative impact on life, self-image and self-confidence.
