Privat pensionssparande : En kvantitativ studie om vilka faktorer som påverkar det privata pensionssparandet

Background Due to reduced GDP in Sweden, future retirees will receive a smaller amount of the public pension compared to the retirees of today (Ferm, 2018; Swedbank, 2017). Hence, the private savings for future retirees may be of greater importance in order to receive a higher pension as a retiree. Latest statistics from 2015 shows that only 17,3 percent of Sweden's wage earners had private savings for retirement (SCB, 2017).  Purpose The aim of this study is to analyse what variables affect an individual to have private savings for retirement by testing hypotheses and comparing the chosen variables.  Methodology This quantitative study has a deductive approach with a comparative design. The theories used throughout the study which have developed the hypotheses of this study are The Life Cycle Hypothesis of Saving, Self-control, Mental Accounting, Ambiguity effect, The Individual Decision-making Process and A Hierarchy of Savings Motives. The variables used throughout the study are age, the level of education, income, self-control, the knowledge of the Swedish pension system and gender. The empirical data has been collected through primary data using surveys with a convenience sample, with 200 responses. Finally, the data from the surveys has been analysed with regression analysis.  Result All the independent variables of this report have a significant impact on private savings for retirement when analysed separately. However, the multivariate analysis shows that only self-control and knowledge of the Swedish pension system have a significant impact on private savings for retirement with 5 percent.  Conclusion The lack of knowledge why people choose to have private savings for retirement has been the purpose of this study. Therefore, this study aims to contribute with information and knowledge about what factors affect the private savings for retirement in order to enlighten people about the importance of having private savings for retirement.  Key words Private savings for retirement, age, level of education, income, self-control, knowledge of the Swedish pension system, gender
