Empatisk förmåga är viktig i yrken där möten med andra människor utgör en stor del av arbetet, såsom vårdgivande yrken och polisyrket. Tidigare studier kring vårdyrken har dock visat att inställningen till betydelsen av empati i yrkesrelaterade situationer kan sjunka med utbildning eller erfarenheter. Liknande studier kring polisyrket saknas. Syftet med denna studie var därmed att undersöka inställningen till betydelsen av empati i relation till polisyrket hos polisstudenter och poliser. Med hjälp av ett självskattningsformulär, baserat på Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy Student version och anpassat till polisyrket, undersöktes två frågeställningar relaterat till syftet. Utifrån studiens första frågeställning undersöktes huruvida det fanns någon skillnad mellan polisstudenter tidigt i utbildningen och polisstudenter sent i utbildningen, samt yrkesverksamma poliser avseende inställning till betydelsen av empati. Utifrån den andra frågeställningen undersöktes huruvida det fanns en könsskillnad avseende inställning till betydelsen av empati. Studiens deltagare bestod av 219 deltagare från tre grupper: polisstudenter i termin 1 (n=73) och termin 5 (n=65), samt yrkesverksamma poliser (n=81). En tvåvägs-ANOVA tillämpades för att besvara frågeställningarna. Resultatet visade på en signifikant skillnad i inställning till betydelsen av empati i relation till polisyrket mellan termin 1 och termin 5 samt termin 1 och poliser. Polisstuderande som gick första terminen skattade högre än de som gick sista terminen och yrkesverksamma poliser. Lite oväntat, och inte i linje med tidigare studier, upptäcktes ingen signifikant skillnad i inställning till betydelsen av empati mellan män och kvinnor. Sammanfattningsvis tyder resultatet på att inställningen till betydelsen av empati i yrkesrelaterade situationer sjunker under polisutbildningen på ett liknande sätt som i vårdutbildningar. / An empathic ability has been proven to be of great importance in professions where contact with other people constitutes a large part of the work, such as in caregiving professions and in police work. However, previous studies of caregiving professions have shown that empathy or attitudes towards the importance of empathy in occupational situations can decline with education or experience. No such studies have been found regarding police work. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate attitudes towards the importance of empathy among police students and police officers. Using a self-report questionnaire inspired by Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy Student version (JSPE-S) and modified to fit a police context, two research questions were formulated, related to the aim. The first research question was whether there is a difference between police students in the beginning and in the end of their education, and also police officers, regarding their attitudes towards the importance of empathy. The second research question was whether there are gender differences regarding attitudes towards the importance of empathy. The sample of the study consisted of 219 participants from three groups: police students in term one (n=73) and term five (n=65), and police officers (n=81). A two-way ANOVA was used to answer the research questions. Police students in first term rated higher than those in last term as well as police officers. A bit unexpected, and not in accordance with previous studies, no significant difference in attitudes towards the importance of empathy was found between men and women. In summary, the result indicates that attitudes towards the importance of empathy in occupational situations may decrease during police education in a similar way as in education of caregiving professions.
