This is a thesis in Information Design with an emphasis on Spatial Design. The purpose of the study is to create an active square that fullfills modern day expectations and requirements regarding function and aesthetics. The study investigates how Stora torget (English translation: “The Big Square”) in Västerås can be more inviting and how it should be designed to communicate that is is a meeting place for everyone. Through spatial analysis, observations, notation analysis, interviews and theories it has been established that the square does not live up to the requirements of a public space. Accessibility is poor and therefore excludes many people. The square does not communicate that it is a meeting place and people are generally only passing through it. This thesis has made use of theories, previous research and empirical evidence to create a design proposal that aims to encourage more people to chose to stay and spend more time in the square. The square would therefore become a meeting place and be seen as an important urban space within the city. / Detta är ett examensarbete i informationsdesign med inriktning rumslig gestaltning. Syftet är att skapa ett aktivt torg som möter dagens förväntningar och behov avseende funktion och estetik. I arbetet undersöks hur Stora torget i Västerås kan bli mer inbjudande och hur torget bör formges för att kommunicera en mötesplats för alla. Genom rumslig analys, observationer, notationsanalys, intervjuer och teorier har det framkommit att Stora torget inte uppfyller de krav som kan ställas på ett offentligt rum. Torget är inte tillgängligt för alla, vilket gör att många människor utesluts. Vidare kommunicerar inte platsen att det är en mötesplats, då människor endast passerar torget. Arbetet har med hjälp av teorier, tidigare forskning och empiri resulterat i ett gestaltningsförslag som ska göra att fler människor ska vilja stanna på torget. Platsen ska bli en mötesplats i staden och upplevas som ett viktigt stadsrum i city.
