Syfte: Syftet med studien är att belysa forskning och litteratur kring Lean Production utifrån två vetenskapliga synsätt. Studien syftar även till att undersöka en organisations införande av och arbete med Lean Production, för att kunna ge praktiska bidrag om hur detta arbete kan fortskrida. Metod: Studien har genomförts med en kvalitativ och öppen ansats inom ramen för en fallstudie i samarbete med Sandvik Materials Technology. Empiriskt material har samlats in genom intervjuer och observationer med och av operatörer, produktionsledning och stabspersonal. En omfattande analys av litteratur och forskning kring Lean Production har legat till grund för en teoretisk referensram. Resultat & slutsats: Belysningen av Lean Production visar att systemsynsättet beskriver konceptet som ett säkert recept för framgång, trots sin förenklade syn på organisationers påverkan av omvärldsförändringar. Det socialkonstruktivistiska synsättet visar att Lean Production har en legitimerande funktion i organisationer, men ger liten kunskap om de förändringar som sker i organisationer. Fallstudien visar tydligt på att kundernas ständiga krav på bibehållna och ökade volymer skapar svårigheter att arbeta långsiktigt i tillverkningen på produktionsnivå. Det finns även bristande förståelse för konceptets grundläggande idéer bland operatörerna inom produktionen. Förslag till fortsatt forskning: Det finns ett behov av ytterligare forskning kring hur aktörers förståelse av ett styrkoncepts logik och principer påverkar användningen av konceptet. Uppsatsens bidrag: Den här studien visar att arbetet med konceptet Lean Production kräver svåra avvägningar som är svåra att genomföra och att prioritera emellan, samtidigt som en kombination av vetenskapliga synsätt ger en kritisk men ändå möjliggörande bild av införandet av styrkoncept. Skapandet av en gemensam förståelse mellan ledning och operatörer kan ge en grund för fortsatt utveckling. Studien identifierar även ett ökat behov av helhetssyn och horisontell samordning i takt med ett kontinuerligt och dragande produktionsflöde införs i produktionen. / Aim: The purpose of this study is to cast light on research and literature about Lean Production on the basis of two scientific views. The study also aims at examining an implementation of Lean Production in an organization, which may give practical contributions on how the work can proceed in the future. Method: The study has been carried out with a qualitative approach through a case study in cooperation with Sandvik Materials Technology. Empirical material has been collected through interviews and with operators, production management and staff, combined with observations on the production floor. An extensive analysis of literature and research connected to Lean Production has formed the basis of the theoretical framework. Result & Conclusions: The analysis of Lean Production shows that the systems view describe the concept as a safe recipe for success, albeit its simplified view on how organizations are affected by changes in the surrounding environment. The social constructive view shows that Lean Production has a legitimatizing function in organizations, but presents lacking knowledge about the changes that occur inside organizations. The case study clearly shows that the constant demands on preserved and increasing volumes and quality by customers creates difficulties in working with a long-term perspective on the production level. There is a lack of understanding about the basic ideas of the concept among operators in the production. Suggestions for future research: Further research on how actors understanding of a concepts logic and principles affect the use of the concept is needed. Contribution of the thesis: This study shows that a combination of scientific views gives a critical yet enabling view of the implementation of concepts. It also shows that the work with Lean Production demands difficult adjustments to be made that is hard to carry out and prioritize. The creation of a common understanding between production management and operators creates a foundation for further development. The study also identifies an increasing need of a holistic view and horizontal coordination as the production flow is transformed into a continuous and pull-based flow.
