Från semantik till handling : en tematisk analys av militära stridsuppgifter

Misconceptions on the battlefield caused by semantic discrepancy must be avoided. In the pursuit of the effective yet simple order using the proper military task verbs, military officers seem to have difficulty understanding the semantics. Interpretation of a task verb can become something completely different for the lower levels if there is a discrepancy between the different command levels. A thematic analyze of ten semi-structured interviews with the purpose of mapping the task verb semantic discrepancy among officers gives two main themes. Discrepancy in hierarchy levels and discrepancy in attitude and task ambition. A conclusion is that discrepancy can be avoided by focusing the military education to embrace the proper semantics and by that reducing the risk of misconception. Mapping this phenomena brings knowledge to a relatively unexplored area, which is the main contribution of the thesis to the field of semantic research.
