The aim for this study is to shed light on social studies teachers approach to the school´s democratic mission and its conditions in today´s society with social media as a new political arena. The teachers approach towards social media in social studies teaching is investigated using semi-structured interviews and a thematic analysis. The empirical material consists of six interviews which are analyzed using the theory of the democratic ideal models and the didactic triangle. The conclusion from the analysis is that the respondents use social media sparingly in social studies teaching because the teachers consider themselves to have limited knowledge of the subject in comparison to the students. It also appears that there is a gap between the students’ understanding of the reality that takes place via social media and the traditional way of teaching about the outside world.
