Terra Solaris Vineyard

In the rural areas just outside Karlskrona is Stora Boråkra located. As an expanding commercial winery it has through the years increased their production by 1600% since the beginning in 2009 and is already today the biggest winery in the county of Blekinge. This existing winery gets re-designed with an interpretation of the old traditional building technique skiftesverk together with preservation of the existing. The program of the winery gets an addition of a restaurant with the concept of co-exist with the production, creating an experience for the visitors of drinking wine in close relation to the production. By increasing the surface area of the vines into an area of 17 acres, with the potential of growing up to 40 000 vines this winery will position it self as one of the biggest in Sweden.Karlskrona, known for being one of the top locations in terms of total amount of sun hours yearly serves as a good place and has great potential of growing grapes. Taking global warming into consideration, the future of wine making in the northern parts of the world is getting better each year. Sweden has the potential of growing as a wine country, certainly in terms of producing high quality white wines. The footprint of the existing building has been used as reference and the void between the two buildings got addition of a solid concrete volume which acts functionally as vertical movement within the building, place for toilets and ventilation but also visually as counterbalance to the extensive roof.  The building is divided in two climate zones, one without insulation where sorting and pressing of the grapes is taking place and one insulated part where fermentation, aging and a restaurant is located. The existing masonry wall has been preserved, with its old wooden doors kept in place which acts as an additional layer to the doors behind but also speaks to the exterior whether open or not.
