Previous issue date: 2014-08-29 / The purpose of this thesis is to identify which management skills are relevant for the transition and continuity of the family business from first to second generation ownership. This research explores the succession process in family business via a competency-based perspective. It was taken into account that succession within family enterprise involves management and leadership of property, family and business. Qualitative data were gathered from three family-run companies that operate in the service sector, being small or mediumsized enterprises, which were going through joint work between founder and successor. In the results, the competencies of both founder and successor, the relevance of such competencies for the business and a comparison between them were looked into. In conclusion, it is possible to state that the founders competencies reflected on the management style and the successors most relevant competencies worked for enhancing the company management. It was also possible to observe the expectations regarding property management and family leadership, the structuring of the succession process and the successors need for improvement at the companies under study. / Esta disserta??o tem como objetivo identificar quais compet?ncias gerenciais s?o relevantes para assumir o neg?cio e dar continuidade ? empresa familiar da primeira para segunda gera??o. A pesquisa explora o processo de sucess?o em empresas familiares atrav?s da perspectiva de compet?ncias. Levou-se em considera??o que a sucess?o da organiza??o familiar envolve o gerenciamento e a lideran?a da propriedade, fam?lia e neg?cio. Foram coletados dados qualitativos em tr?s empresas familiares, cujas caracter?sticas s?o: ser do setor de servi?os, ser classificada como pequeno ou m?dio porte e passar por um momento de trabalho em conjunto entre fundador e sucessor. Como resultados foram observadas as compet?ncias do fundador e do sucessor, a relev?ncia que as compet?ncias tinham para o neg?cio e a compara??o das compet?ncias entre fundador e sucessor. Conclui-se que em rela??o ?s compet?ncias dos fundadores refletiam no estilo de gest?o e que as compet?ncias mais relevantes nos sucessores funcionavam de maneira a complementar a gest?o da empresa, tamb?m notou-se as expectativas em rela??o ? gest?o de propriedade e lideran?a de fam?lia, a estrutura??o do processo sucess?rio nas empresas e as necessidades de desenvolvimento pelos sucessores das empresas estudadas.
