The aim of this study is to examine physical education teachers’ and students’ views on the thesis and its part in the physical teacher education program at The Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences. Does the view on the thesis differ between techers/students and the program with its curriculum and other policy documents? What does students/teachers value in a thesis? Does teachers/students have a mutual habitus concerning the thesis in the form of essay writing and how is this expressed? The study is based on a qualitative survey in which the respondents mainly answered open-ended questions with written answers. These answers have been categorized and analyzed with the aims of the study and the previous research in mind. The views on the purpose of the thesis differ, both within the group teachers/students and to a certain degree in relation to policy documents. The value of the thesis differs within the group. Two categories that frequently emerge when describing the contribution of the thesis are a deepened critical approach and essay-specific knowledge. A mutual habitus within this group concerning the scientific field of the education and profession was not found. Generally, the respondents seem to fall into two main categories, those who value a scientific approach highly and those who value it less. In conclusion, the view of the thesis is divided amongst the respondents. It is perceived as both important and without meaning in almost the same extent. The value it is considered contributing with varies both concerning the scientific approach and professional necessity. / Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka synen på och upplevelsen av examensarbetets roll inom idrottslärarutbildningen hos examinerade idrottslärare samt idrottslärarstudenter med en utbildning från Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan. Skiljer sig synen på syftet med examensarbetet mellan lärare/studenter och utbildning samt styrdokument? Vad värderar studenter/lärare i ett examensarbete? Har lärare/studenter en gemensam habitus angående uppsatsskrivande som examensarbete samt hur uttrycks denna? Studien bygger på en kvalitativ enkätundersökning där respondenterna till stor del har fått skriva kommentarer som svar på öppna frågor. Dessa svar har kategoriserats och analyserats med utgångspunkt i frågeställningar och tidigare forskning. Synen på examensarbetets syfte skiljer sig både inom gruppen lärare/studenter samt i viss del gentemot styrdokumenten i den mån dessa visar på ett syfte. Gruppen har skilda uppfattningar om värdet av examensarbetet. Två kategorier som framkommer frekvent är examensarbetets bidrag till ett fördjupat kritiskt förhållningssätt och ämnesspecik kunskapsutveckling. En gemensam habitus för denna grupp kring området vetenskaplighet i utbildning och yrke framkommer inte. Överlag upplevs respondenterna falla in i två generella kategorier, de som värderar vetenskaplighet för idrottslärare högt och de som värderar den lägre. Sammanfattningsvis är bilden av examensarbetet splittrad bland respondenterna. Den upplevs som viktig i lika stor utsträckning som den anses sakna betydelse, de värden den anses bidra med varierar både i vetenskaplighet och yrkesrelaterat behov.
