Kulturelle Identität und Sprache : Wie sich Sprache und Identität beeinflussen und mit der Kultur zusammenhängen / Cultural identity and language

The influence of language and culture on one another has not been extensively investigated. On the other hand, there are many indicators that suggest that there is such a link. The aim of this study is to find out exactly what this relationship is and how the mutual influence affects our thinking. In particular, it examines how values change with the change of language. In this context, culture is defined as a common system of norms, values and ways of thinking that are learned within a common living space. To test the hypothesis that there is a link between language choices and mindsets, a survey was distributed to multilingual immigrants. The respondents were divided into their mother tongues and asked first in Swedish and then in their mother tongue on the same democratic issues. The answers were evaluated using a categorized content analysis. The results showed that many respondents gave different answers to the same questions when they switched languages. These results indicate both that there is a connection between the cultural imprint and the language associated with it and that, together with the learning of a language, a cultural imprint also arises.
