Ele está presente em todo o mundo, atravessa toda a história humana e sabemos que a orientação religiosa de um indivíduo ajuda a compor o modo como vê o mundo, como vê a si mesmo, como interage com outros, os seus valores morais e até suas decisões políticas. A despeito disso, o comportamento religioso tem sido pouco estudado por behavioristas radicais. Neste trabalho, apresentamos um breve panorama do estudo contemporâneo do comportamento religioso e buscamos investigar o papel de alguns conceitos comportamentais em sua origem e manutenção, de um modo ainda não empreendido por outros autores. Primeiramente, investigamos se o conceito de comportamento supersticioso pode auxiliar na compreensão do comportamento religioso. Em seguida, analisamos o papel do reforçamento social no comportamento religioso. Por fim, investigamos se poderia haver no comportamento religioso elementos do que o behaviorismo radical classifica como mentalismos, e se a hipóteses de como e por que ocorrem os mentalismos auxiliam na compreensão do comportamento religioso. Concluímos que estes conceitos, isoladamente, explicam apenas alguns elementos do comportamento religioso, deixando lacunas; entretanto, quando tomados em conjunto, compõem uma hipótese mais abrangente e inteligível acerca da origem e da manutenção do comportamento religioso, com vantagens sobre outras hipóteses correntes. Palavras-chave: comportamento religioso; behaviorismo radical; comportamento supersticioso; reforçamento social; mentalismo. / Abstract: Religious behavior plays a central role in the lives of many people. It is present throughout the world, through all human history and it is known that the religious orientation of an individual helps to compose his world's views, how he see himself, how he interact with others, his moral values and even his political decisions. Nevertheless, religious behavior has not been frequently studied by radical behaviorists. In this paper, we present a brief overview of the contemporary research about religious behavior and seek to investigate the role of some behavioral concepts in its origin and maintenance, in a manner not yet undertaken by other authors. First, we investigate if the concept of superstitious behavior can assist in the understanding of religious behavior. Then we analyze the role of social reinforcement in religious behavior. Finally, we investigate whether there could be in the religious behavior elements of what radical behaviorism ranks as mentalism, and if the hypotheses of how and why mentalism occurs helps to understand religious behavior. We conclude that these concepts alone explain only some elements of religious behavior, leaving gaps; however, when taken together, they add up to a more complete and intelligible hypothesis about the origin and maintenance of religious behavior, with advantages over other current hypotheses.
