Previous issue date: 2014-12-15 / In contemporaneity, ageing is getting more visibility, with a variety of speeches about what means to be old and how achieve good ageing. Those speeches, sometimes ambiguous, treats ageing as a negative and homogeneous process (associated with dependence, decline, loneliness and death) as well as a positive process, celebrating the populational ageing, suggesting the citizens to disguise the signs of ageing and making them adopt total responsibility for ageing, taking care of their health and appearance. In this context, old age is refused and marginalized or a type specific of ageing is appreciated. I propose another perspective to think about this phenomenon, considering the contribution of the existential phenomenology of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. I interviewed eleven people, adults, men and women, who lives in the city of Fortaleza, Ceará, aged between 30 and 59 years old, in the intent to understand how they experience their ageing and how this experience could reveal their project of being toward the future, toward the elderly they want to be. The project of being is a fundamental concept in Sartre, that defines human existence and elucidates the movement of human being in the world. The meanings of ageing and the movement of the collaborators toward senescence are diverse and demonstrate how they apropriate objective data such as familiar, interpersonal, cultural, social aspects and the context where they live. I emphasize that the project of being is not a finished synthesis, because whilst there is life, there are possibilities to be elected for each human being, since we are a totalization in progress which will finish only with death. I hope this research brings more visibility to this subject and colaborates on the desconstruction of a limited speech of old age, bringing reflections and actions about the way we treat ageing and elderly people in contemporary world, contributing with knowledge production.
Keywords: old age; ageing; project of being; existencial phenomenology; Jean-Paul Sartre; Simone de Beauvoir. / Na contemporaneidade, há um cenário de maior visibilidade sobre o envelhecimento, com uma variedade de discursos sobre o que significa ser velho e como envelhecer bem. Tais discursividades, por vezes ambíguas, concebem a velhice tanto como um processo negativo e homogeneizador (associado à dependência, ao declínio, à solidão e à morte), quanto como um processo positivo, em que o aumento da longevidade é celebrado, mas no qual os sinais do envelhecimento são amenizados, responsabilizando, unicamente, o próprio indivíduo por seu envelhecimento e pressionando-o ao autocuidado com a saúde e a aparência. Neste contexto, ora se nega e se marginaliza a velhice, ora se valoriza determinado tipo de envelhecimento. Proponho uma perspectiva mais abrangente sobre o envelhecimento a partir das contribuições da fenomenologia existencial de Jean-Paul Sartre e de Simone de Beauvoir. Entrevistei onze sujeitos colaboradores, adultos, homens e mulheres, domiciliados no município de Fortaleza, Ceará, com idade entre 30 e 59 anos, no intuito de compreender como vivenciam seu envelhecimento e como este processo anuncia o projeto de ser dos sujeitos em direção ao futuro, aos velhos que pretendem se tornar. Nesta perspectiva, o envelhecimento foi compreendido como anunciador do projeto de ser destes sujeitos, conceito fundamental de Sartre, que define a existência humana e que elucida o movimento do homem no mundo. O modo como significam o envelhecimento e se movimentam rumo à velhice é plural e demonstra como singularizam sua experiência vivida nos campos familiar, pessoal, interpessoal, grupal, cultural e social em que vivem. Ressalto que projeto de ser não é uma síntese acabada, pois, enquanto há vida, há possibilidades a serem eleitas por cada sujeito, já que somos uma totalização em curso, que apenas se findará com a morte. Espero que este estudo possa dar maior visibilidade ao tema e colaborar na desconstrução de um discurso reducionista sobre a velhice, suscitando reflexões e ações sobre o modo como a contemporaneidade lida com o envelhecimento e com os idosos, contribuindo com a produção de conhecimento sobre o tema.
