Previous issue date: 2014-12-18 / Violence is a social problem present in the life of adolescents around the world. Adolescence is an especially vulnerable stage in being the period of life in which the socialization process is accentuated, as well as living with differences, and the school is the most common place for this interaction and interpersonal relationship. Several studies point to a growth in violence within the schools, which teaches adolescents to treat any situation with violence, creating a vicious circle. This study had as objective to identify distinct modalities of interpersonal violence among students, during adolescence, in municipal public schools in the city of Sobral, Ceará; identifying social demographic profile, analyzing risk factors for different types of violence. A quantitative study, with descriptive and cross-section design. The population of this study was composed of students, in random selection, from the 8th and 9th years, with a total of 401 participants. Data collection occurred between June and August 2014, by means of a structured, anonymous and self-applied questionnaire. Fisher's exact test and Fisher and Bonferroni's test were used for statistical analysis. During the thirty days before the study, 16.0¨% of the students were involved in fights, with 8.7% requiring medical assistance, 19.2% consumed alcoholic beverages, 11.0% smoked, and 14.5% used some kind of drug. Fighting was more frequent in the 8th year (23.8%), among repetition students (26.3%) and males (20.3%). It was concluded that violence is part of the life of Brazilian students from public schools in the 8th and 9th years, with special focus on fighting, verbal violence, and threats. From the results, it was possible to identify the presence of violence in the study population, showing the need for the implementation of programs directed to the prevention of violence in schools. / A violência é um problema social presente na vida dos adolescentes em todo mundo. A adolescência é uma etapa especialmente vulnerável por ser o período da vida em que se acentua o processo de socialização, bem como a conviver com as diferenças, sendo a escola o âmbito mais comum das relações interpessoais. Vários estudos apontam um crescimento da violência dentro das escolas, o que acaba por ensinar os adolescentes a tratar qualquer situação com violência, criando um círculo vicioso. Este estudo teve como objetivo conhecer distintas modalidades de violência interpessoal entre os estudantes, na fase da adolescência, nas escolas públicas municipais da cidade de Sobral, Ceará; identificando o perfil sociodemográfico; analisando os fatores de risco para os diferentes tipos de violência. Foi um estudo de abordagem quantitativa, com caráter descritivo e transversal. A população deste estudo foi constituída por estudantes, em seleção randômica, dos 8o e 9o anos, com um total de 401 participantes. A coleta de dados ocorreu entre junho e agosto de 2014, por meio de um questionário estruturado, anônimo e autoaplicado. O teste exato de Fisher e o teste de Fisher e Bonferroni foram usados para a análise estatística. Durante os trinta dias anteriores à pesquisa, 16,0% dos estudantes se envolveram em brigas, com 8,7% necessitando de atendimento médico, 19,2% fizeram uso de bebida alcoólica, 11,0% fumaram, e 14,5% usaram algum tipo de droga. As brigas foram mais frequentes no 8º ano (23,8%), entre os alunos repetentes (26,3%) e do sexo masculino (20,3%). Conclui-se que a violência faz parte da vida dos estudantes brasileiros de escolas públicas, do 8º e 9º ano, com foco especial nas brigas, violência verbal e ameaças. A partir dos resultados apresentados foi possível identificar a presença da violência na população do estudo, mostrando a necessidade da implementação de programas voltados à prevenção de violência nas escolas.
