Previous issue date: 2010-05-18 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / The present work, within the research standards of the Catholic University of
São Paulo, is based upon the research of history and description of the
Portuguese language with respect to Linguistic Historiography. Thus,
methodological principles of historiography Linguistics were aimed at
reconstructing the past in order to understand more clearly the present. This
study analyses the reports issued by the Institute of Botany of São Paulo in the
period known as the Estado Novo, which corresponds to the regime of Getúlio
Vargas (Brazil´s President from 1937 to 1945), a period regarded as
authoritarian and centralizing tendency, through the process of forming a
national identity.
The research began with the assessment of how the Annual Reports of the
Institute of Botany (1940-1955) contributed and influenced the reporting of the
institution. The main objectives were as follows: a) re-reading and
reconstructing the events based upon primary sources analysis aiming at an
interpretive study, critical and analytic of the three annual reports as the very
basis of the research, b) describing the social, ideological and political context
in the first half of the twentieth century in Brazil, focused on the state of São
Paulo, c) reviewing the reports by considering the linguistic dimensions either
internal and external of the research, d) comparison between data collected and
how they are used nowadays in order to verify the extent to which the Annual
Reports of the Institute of Botany preserved the Portuguese language.
In order to achieve the research goals, the selected documents were analyzed
based on categories established in terms of reading primary sources, as
follows: a) the structural organization of the documents (formal and composition
patterns) and b) the linguistic and grammatical organization.
The research analysis showed that: a) the Annual Reports are historic heritage,
b) as for the historical context, clear influences on the production of
the documents were observed as they bring major linguistic traces, c)
nationalism issues were present in the machinery of government through
evidence shown in the documents, d) the production of documents showed the
historical influences of the period and also that the reports were prepared
according to standard cultural norms of the time, e) it was designed to meet the
needs of the government and the public, f) It was also possible to notice that the
history of the Institute of Botany is vanishing throughout time due to the lack of
records of its activities in current reports.
The study showed that annual reports are quite important tools for the
dissemination of the Institute activities. They also reflect a historical moment of
the institution and may serve to guide leaders in the decision-making process / Este trabalho compreende um estudo que, situado na linha de pesquisa História e
Descrição da Língua Portuguesa, da Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São
Paulo, está delimitado à disciplina Historiografia Linguística. Assim, seguimos os
princípios metodológicos da Historiografia Linguística visando a reconstruir o
passado para compreender com clareza o presente. Tem por estudo os Relatórios
elaborados pelo Instituto de Botânica de São Paulo, no período conhecido como
Estado Novo, que corresponde ao regime do então Presidente da República
Federativa do Brasil, Getúlio Vargas (1937-1945), período tido como autoritário e
de tendência centralizadora, passando pelo processo de formação de uma
identidade nacional.
Tivemos como ponto de partida o objetivo geral: verificar em que medida os
Relatórios Anuais do Instituto de Botânica (1940-1955) contribuíram e
influenciaram na elaboração dos relatórios da instituição. Tivemos como objetivos
específicos: a) reler e reconstruir os fatos, a partir da análise das fontes primárias,
objetivando um estudo interpretativo, crítico e analítico, dos três Relatórios Anuais,
que serviram de base para a nossa pesquisa; b) descrever o contexto político,
social e ideológico, da primeira metade do século XX no Brasil, com destaque para
o Estado de São Paulo; c) analisar os relatórios considerando-se as dimensões
linguísticas internas e externas da pesquisa; d) fazer as aproximações
necessárias, entre os dados colhidos e o modo como hoje são utilizados,
objetivando verificar em que medida os Relatórios Anuais do Instituto de Botânica
preservaram a Língua Portuguesa.
Para que nossos objetivos fossem alcançados, analisamos os documentos
selecionados com base em categorias estabelecidas a partir da leitura de fontes
primárias, as categorias foram: a) a organização estrutural dos documentos
(formal e composicional) e b) a organização linguístico-gramatical.
A análise levou-nos à constatação de que: a) os Relatórios Anuais são patrimônios
históricos; b) pelo contexto histórico, ficam claras as influências deste na produção
do documento, que trazem marcas linguísticas importantes; c) constatou-se a
questão do nacionalismo presente na máquina governamental, por meio de
indícios apresentados no documento; d) na produção dos documentos é possível
perceber as influências históricas da época e concluir que os Relatórios eram
redigidos utilizando a norma culta padrão da época; e) tinha como objetivo atender
ao governo bem como o público em geral; e) constatamos, também, que a história
da instituição está se perdendo, tendo em vista a ausência de registros de suas
atividades nos relatórios atuais.
Concluímos que os Relatórios Anuais são ferramentas importantes para a
divulgação de suas atividades e, por refletirem um momento histórico da
instituição, prestam, também, para nortearem as decisões de seus dirigentes
