Previous issue date: 2013 / A dissertação ora apresentada é fruto de uma investigação feita com duas gerações da mesma família, pais e filhos adultos em bairros da periferia de uma pequena cidade do interior de Minas Gerais. Sabe-se que na família, de uma geração a outra, são passadas inclinações, práticas e disposições. O objetivo principal do estudo é conhecer as mudanças e permanências nas práticas cotidianas de apoio à escolarização dos filhos em cada uma dessas gerações. Para isso, optou-se pela abordagem qualitativa e pela metodologia da história oral temática a fim de perceber a memória de pais e filhos em relação à sua vivência escolar, o meio em que vivem e o papel da família e da comunidade nesse contexto. Os resultados mostraram, entre outras coisas, que de uma geração à outra muito mudou. A escola, embora tenha sido valorizada na geração dos mais velhos, hoje tem ocupado papel central na vida das famílias jovens. No entanto, as experiências de fracasso observadas entre as gerações e as pessoas próximas, além da falta de conhecimento dos “caminhos” escolares, acabaram por ampliar as barreiras de possibilidades de possíveis êxitos no ensino formal. Se na geração dos pais os castigos físicos eram recorrentes e a autoridade do professor era incontestável, na geração dos jovens preza-se o diálogo e o professor já não é associado ao saber inquestionável. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ / ABSTRACT: This dissertation is a result of an investigation that has been done with two generations in the same family, parents and adult children who are parents too in peripheral neighborhoods in a small city in Minas Gerais. It has been known that in the family, from one generation to another, inclinations and practices are transmitted. The main objective of this study is to know the representations that each generation has about the school and its relationship with the family, as well as the changes and continuities on the daily practices that help to support the children schooling. For that, it was chose the qualitative approach and the thematic oral history in order to note the relation of fathers’ and sons’ memories with their scholar life, the environment in which they live and the role of families and communities in that context. The research has been showed, among other results, that between one generation and another there were many changes. Although the school has been valorized in the older generation, today it has been played a central role in the younger families. However, the experiences of failure observed between generations and people close to them, apart from the lack of knowledge of the "paths" school, eventually enlarge the possibilities of possible success barriers in formal education. If in the parents’ generation the physicals punishment were frequent and the teacher authority was unquestionable, in the younger parents’ generation, what is important is to pay attention to the dialog and the teacher is not considered unquestionable.
